“The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.” – (John 12:34-36)
The Lord of glory declared to His disciples, and to those that stood by, His purpose for coming into the world. The hour had come that the Son of man should be glorified (v 23). Christ would soon be lifted up to die as our divine Substitute, in order that the justice of God be satisfied for a multitude of chosen sinners. And through the accomplishment of this great work of grace, through His vicarious suffering and death, all that are in Him would be raised to life and glorified in the Son of man, the last Adam, our divine Representative.
The fruit of Christ’s finished work is the faith of God’s elect, all who must and shall spring to life by the Spirit’s power (v 24). Through Christ’s righteousness and infinite merit, and by the planting of God’s Word in their hearts, life and immortality is brought to light in them by the Gospel. As surely as a corn of wheat dies and is planted, and then springs up into the light of day by God’s life-giving power, the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, the complete election of grace, shall be translated into the glorious Light of the Gospel by faith.
But there were some that stood by who questioned the Lord in unbelief. Though He had done many miracles among them, and preached for three years the Gospel of the kingdom of God, yet they believed not on Him (v 37). To these, the Son of God gave a solemn warning, which directly applies to every person who has heard the glorious Gospel of God, and yet refuses to believe. The Lord said, “Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you” (v 35). Specifically, this may apply to that terrible judgment God executed against the Jewish nation for rejecting Christ. God blinded them and sent the Gospel to the Gentiles, according to His sovereign purpose, and to fulfill the word of God (vv 37-41). But this is also a solemn warning to you that have heard Christ speak by His servants who preach the Gospel. There is an appointed measure and duration of light that God has ordained, before He allows the darkness to swallow up the unbelieving reprobate. It is but ‘a little while’!
While it is clear in God’s word that salvation is God’s work alone, it is also evident that man is responsible for the light that God gives. And the fault of your damnation, if you perish, will be your own obstinate unbelief. You cannot give yourself life and faith in Christ. But you are responsible, while you have light, to believe in the light, in order that you may be a child of light (v 36). If God has mercy on you and saves you by His grace, it will be according to His own will through the light of His word (James 1:18). But if you die and go to Hell, it will be the result of your own willful unbelief and rejection of Christ, God’s Marvelous Light.
“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.” – (Acts 13:38-41)
It’s not your responsibility to understand the deep mysteries of Christ. Only God can give you understanding. But it is your responsibility to walk in the light that God has given you. Walk in the light, taking this sure promise of God as your beacon of hope: “Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David” (Isa 55:3). God is Faithful. Trust His word.
