The forming of Eve is a picture of the grace of Christ and how God saves sinners. Eve was the bride of Adam, even as the Church is the spiritual bride of Christ. Quoting Adam’s exact words, Paul tells us plainly, “We are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church” (Eph. 5:30-32). What are some precious things about our Lord Jesus Christ we should learn from the marriage union of our first parents?
THE SURETY OF GOD’S COVENANT
Adam was placed in the garden “to dress it and to keep it” as the surety of God’s covenant (v. 15). He alone was responsible to maintain paradise by his obedience. Eve had no such responsibility. That’s why nothing happened when she ate the forbidden fruit. The covenant was made with Adam.
Christ is the Surety of God’s everlasting covenant of grace. He alone was made responsible for God’s elect. What happens when a child of God sins? Before God, nothing happens! Thank God we’re accepted in the Beloved. God teach us to hate sin!
EVE WAS CREATED IN ADAM
Where was Eve when God made the covenant with Adam in the garden? She was not yet formed and conscious, but she was alive and present in Adam’s side. When God breathed life into Adam, Eve received her life in him. She was created in Adam.
Children of God, where were we when God made that everlasting covenant of grace in Christ? We were present in Christ our Surety. We possessed eternal life in Christ from everlasting, having received it by God’s unconditional purpose of grace.
EVE WAS TAKEN FROM ADAM’S SIDE
Eve had her existence in Adam, but she still had to be taken from his side. There was no other way for her to be formed and experience life in that paradise of God, except by God opening Adam’s flesh. Eve was Adam’s rib; a vital part of him, close to his heart. Of God was she in Adam, who of God was made her head, her surety, her life, her all. And she was made from that which God took from Adam.
The Church was taken from the wounded side of our dear Redeemer. What did God take from Him? What did Christ provide? God took what we could never produce; a perfect life of heart-obedience, and perfect satisfaction for justice. God opened Him up, exposed His heart and soul, made Him to be sin for us, and quenched the fiery sword of divine justice in the apex of His obedient pulse. From the precious bleeding side of Christ, God took perfect righteousness and satisfaction, making the Church perfect through blood atonement. As Adam was put to sleep in order for Eve to live, Christ was put to death, that through His death we might live (Col 2:21-22). Through death He put away sin, and by His resurrection we now live before God in Him.
EVE WAS BROUGHT TO ADAM
The sure result of Christ’s finished work is the effectual calling of God’s elect. Each and every chosen, redeemed sinner shall be brought to Christ by faith. Each one shall be called by the gospel. And when God makes a believer through the righteousness of Christ, He brings that sinner to receive Him as LORD and Master. God makes us a help meet for Christ. We become laborers together with God, and fellow-helpers to the truth, being made fit by grace (1 Cor 3:9; 3 Jhn 1:8; Col 1:12).
