“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous” (1 John 3:10-12).
"And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD" (Genesis 4:3).
Abel did righteousness, coming to God by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Heb 11:4). He trusted in the blood of the Lamb as his only basis of hope before a holy God. He had heard about the Lamb of God from his father. Adam preached the same gospel to both Cain and Abel, and “in the process of time it came to pass” that the gospel manifested God’s eternal purpose of grace (Gen 4:3). Abel manifested that he was a chosen, redeemed child of God, called by God’s effectual grace, and born again by God’s Spirt through the gospel. His faith in Christ was the evidence. Cain manifested that he was of that wicked one, a cursed reprobate and a condemned man. His unbelief manifested that God had passed him by and appointed him from the beginning as a vessel of wrath (Jude 1:4).
It shall come to pass that the gospel I preach shall manifest God’s eternal purpose for you, whether you are an elect child of God or a reprobate child of wrath.
The Apostle Peter preached the gospel on the Day of Pentecost, opening his message like this: “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).
And again, Peter preached to those religious, unbelieving Jews the gospel of God’s sovereign grace in Christ, warning them like this: “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people” (Acts 3:22-23).
It shall come to pass! What shall come to pass? God’s sovereign will and purpose concerning you! Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. Believe not and you shall be damned.
