"And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD" (Genesis 6:7-8).
Roughly forty-four hundred years ago, God sent a deluge of wrath upon this earth and drowned everything that had breath under a mighty flood. God wiped out billions of people at one time by an overflowing scourge of divine anger! “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” Noah found free, unmerited favor and acceptance with God. Billions were slain and sent to hell, “but Noah found grace,” and was delivered. Multitudes were executed in strict justice, “but Noah found grace,” and God placed him safely in the ark. Countless were destroyed by the waters of judgment, “But Noah found grace,” and was saved by the flood waters. The same flood, which drowned the entire world, lifted Noah above God’s wrath, because he was in the ark.
The ark by which Noah was saved is a clear picture of the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. Just as Noah was saved in the ark through the waters of judgment, all that are in Christ are saved by the judgment of God accomplished at Calvary. God’s people did not escape the wrath of God against sin. Judgment fell on all of God’s elect as we were carried in the bosom of the Lord Jesus Christ, our Representative on the cross. We were “reconciled in the body of His flesh through death” (Col 1:22). The wrath that we deserved fell on Him, and by His grace through blood atonement, we are presented holy and without blame at the right hand of God (Heb 10:12-14).
WHY DID NOAH FIND GRACE?
Noah was a fallen son of Adam like all other men. He had no personal merit or worth to distinguish him from the myriads that perished in their sins. By nature, “There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God” (Rom 3:10-11). Why then did Noah find what no other man on earth could find? Noah found grace because God chose him! God had mercy on Noah (Rom 9:18). While the entire world perished in the blindness of their unbelief, Noah found grace because God had from the beginning chosen him to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth (2 Thes 2:13). Noah found grace because of God’s sovereign election of grace! God made him to differ (1 Cor 4:7).
HOW DID NOAH FIND GRACE?
He certainly did not find grace by his own diligent searching and devotion to knowing the true God. “There is none that seeketh after God” (Rom 3:11). Noah found grace because God found him, and came to him, and called him by the gospel. God spoke to Noah, and said, “The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch” (vv 13-14). God called Noah by grace and gave him the ark as his only hope of salvation. That ark was Christ! It was made of gopher wood, an incorruptible wood, portraying the spotless, incorruptible humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ. And it was pitched within and without with pitch. That word ‘pitch’ is the Hebrew word for ‘atonement’ or ‘covering’. God effectually called Noah by the gospel of limited atonement and particular redemption in Christ. Noah would only be safe from the flood of God’s wrath under the safety of blood atonement, under the precious blood of Jesus the Lord!
WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF NOAH FINDING GRACE?
Noah believed and obeyed the LORD God, built the ark, and trusted in the promise of salvation by it. “Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he” (v 22). The evidence that Noah had found favor with God was the obedience of faith.
Have you and I found favor with God in the Lord Jesus Christ? How can we know that we are chosen of God to salvation and redeemed by the precious blood of Christ? “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). If we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, it’s because we were elected by God the Father, redeemed by God the Son, and irresistibly called by God the Holy Spirit. And coming to God by faith in Christ alone, we are built up on Him as the sure Foundation of our Hope. Come to Christ by faith, and keep coming to Christ by faith, building up all your hope in Him by the power of God’s grace through the gospel.
“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 1:20-21).
