“And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground” (Gen 4:8-10)
Although Cain slew his brother in secret, the voice of Abel’s blood cried unto God for retribution. His blood called for justice to be executed against Cain for committing cold-blooded murder. God heard the cry of Abel’s blood and cursed the murdering wretch. God answered the blood cry according to strict, holy justice and truth.
The Spirit of God tells us of another man’s blood “that speaketh better things than that of Abel” (Heb 12:24). This man’s blood is the blood of God the Son, the blood of the God-man, the blood of Christ our Lord. That unspeakably precious blood, which flowed from the butchered body of His sinless flesh, effectually speaks far better things than that of Abel. Abel’s blood cried out to justice for divine retribution against the violent criminal who shed it. But the blood of Christ speaks to divine justice on the behalf of violent criminals, demanding a just pardon and free forgiveness on the basis of blood redemption and atonement. Oh how glorious it is to hear the blood of Christ speak on behalf of my poor, sinful soul! In the Scriptures, the blood of Christ is shown to speak in two distinct ways…
IN THE COURT OF HEAVEN
First, the blood of Christ is the sinner’s perfect plea at the Mercy Seat of God in Heaven. This truth was shown in type by the high priest sprinkling blood at the mercy seat in the tabernacle on the day of atonement (Lev 16). The mercy seat was a solid gold lid that covered the ark of the covenant in the most holy place. God promised, “There I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat” (Ex 25:22). Christ our Surety has fully accomplished the covenant of God’s grace. By His own blood, He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us (Heb 9:12). By virtue of His priceless blood, divine justice now demands the everlasting salvation of God’s elect! Yonder in Heaven’s glory, the blood of God our Savior has purchased the pardon of every sinner that trusts in Him.
IN THE COURT OF CONSCIENCE
Second, the blood of Christ effectually speaks peace and reconciliation to the heart of every believer. We may see this truth pictured by the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing (Lev 14). The priest sprinkled the blood on the leper and pronounced him clean. Trusting Christ by the Spirit’s power, the hearts of God’s elect are sprinkled with the blood of the covenant, purging our conscience from dead works to serve the living God (Heb 9:14). The Lord Jesus Christ sets His people free from the law and sin’s condemnation. It is for this reason that He is the Mediator of the New Covenant, that through death and the accomplishment of redemption, they which are called by God might receive the promise of eternal inheritance (Heb 9:15).
Has God called you unto the fellowship of His dear Son? Do you right now believe on the Lord Jesus Christ? Has God given you precious faith in Him? Do you trust Christ alone? If you do, then His blood effectually speaks pardon and forgiveness to your heart! But if you’re still trusting in yourself or in something you have done, your screaming, guilty conscience cannot be silenced. Only the Savior’s precious blood can speak peace to your heart. And God has set Christ forth to be a propitiation (or mercy seat) through faith in His blood (Rom 3:24-26). There is mercy to be had at the Mercy Seat in Heaven, where Christ is seated on the throne of grace for sinners. Up there, far above everyone and everything, God has sovereignly declared by the precious blood of His Son that it’s holy, righteous and just for Him to freely justify every sinner that believes in Him. Come to Christ! Trust the Son of God! And then go on your way rejoicing, walking in fellowship with God by faith in Christ, with the free forgiveness of all your sins, being accepted through the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb. Trust Christ and you shall most certainly hear the voice of His blood speak peace to your heart. God’s Spirit answers to the blood, and tells me I am born of God! Have you heard the blood of Christ speak?
