“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel" (Genesis 3:15).
This is the very first gospel message delivered by God Himself. He promised to put enmity between Satan and the woman, between his seed and her seed.
THE SERPENT’S SEED
What is the serpent’s seed? Simply put, every child of Adam is by nature the seed of the serpent, a seed of evil doers (Isa 1:4). We are the natural offspring of an evil father. By Adam’s sin we all became sinners. In sin we were conceived by Adam’s corruptible seed (Ps 51:5). What does this mean?
First, it means that all men by nature are spiritually dead. By one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin (Rom 5:12). The natural man is nothing but a carnal creature. He cannot understand the things of God, nor does he seek to know God (Rom 3:11). He is DEAD!
Second, it means that all men by nature are completely lost. There is no spark of potential for goodness in man. Only sin, only iniquity, only evil and corruption fills his mind, heart and soul. And all his works are evil, including and especially his religious works (Isa 64:6).
Third, it means that all men by nature are blinded by Satan. The serpent takes every natural man captive at his will (2 Tim 2:26). Man is naturally of his father the devil, and the lusts of his father he will do (Jn 8:44). He cannot believe the truth, because there is no truth in him by nature.
Fourth, it means that all men by nature are cursed of God. The natural man is cursed by God’s holy law. He is a law-breaker (Rom 3:19-20; Gal 3:10).
This is the awful description of every natural man that’s without life and faith in Christ. He is a vicious viper in the eyes of God. There is no hope for this corrupt nature of flesh. It cannot be reformed. It cannot change. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. If sinners are to be saved, they must have a new nature given to them by God. They must have a divine, holy nature which cannot sin. They must have good seed planted in them by grace. They must have the woman’s Seed, our Lord Jesus Christ.
THE WOMAN’S SEED
How is Christ the woman’s Seed? First, He is the woman’s Seed by a miraculous virgin-birth. Naturally the woman has no seed. Only the man carries seed for conception. But our Savoir had no earthly father. He was made of a woman, made by God alone, without the aid of a man.
Second, He is the woman’s Seed by the mysterious incarnation of God the eternal Word. The Word was made flesh (Jn 1:14). Christ was not born of Adam’s corrupt seed. He is the incorruptible Seed, the Word of God, which lives and abides forever (1 Pt 1:23).
Third, Christ is the woman’s Seed by the power of God’s Spirit. He was conceived in the womb of Mary by the power of the Holy Ghost. He is that Holy One, separate from sinners and from Adam’s corrupt nature.
When God’s dear Son became flesh in the virgin’s womb, and took to Himself our humanity, He was forever and inseparably joined to His people. God’s elect received a new nature by the incarnation of Christ our Surety. If we are in Christ by faith, it’s because God put us in Christ, and He of God is made unto us all that we need (1 Cor 1:30). So nothing that dwells in our corrupt flesh can ever change or affect what God has made us in Christ.
THE ENMITY BETWEEN
God’s elect are called the woman’s Seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (Rev 12:17). By faith in Christ they keep God’s commandments, because they possess the testimony of Christ in their hearts, by the effectual working of God’s grace.
How are God’s people the woman’s Seed? First, God’s people are born of God. Just as our Savior’s birth was a miracle of God, the new birth of a sinner is a miraculous work of God. God makes His people new creatures.
Second, God’s people are the woman’s Seed by the Word of God. They are born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever (1 Pt 1:23). How is this accomplished? Peter tells us, “And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (v 25).
Third, God’s people are the woman’s Seed by the power of the Holy Spirit. The conception of our Savoir is a good picture of how God saves sinners. Mary was just a sinner. But she was chosen and favored unconditionally by God. God spoke to her by an angel (or messenger). God speaks to sinners by sent messengers of the gospel. Then Mary was overshadowed by the power of the Highest, and Christ was conceived inside of her, according to God’s promise. The Spirit moves upon dead sinners, forming Christ within their hearts by faith.
Fourth, God’s people are the woman’s Seed by an inward struggle. When God forms Christ in a sinner’s heart by faith, He puts enmity between that old man and the new, and a conflict begins. The flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. And these are adversaries, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would (Gal 5:17). That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and it will always be flesh; corrupt, sinful and vile. That old nature never changes. But that which is born of the Spirit is spirit; holy, without sin and precious. “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (1 Jn 3:9).
Where is the battlefield hottest? Where does that old nature most oppose the new man? He fights against free grace. God has put enmity between works and grace, and He commands us, “Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman” (Gal 4:30). Believers are free in Christ! We are not under the law, but under grace. We are children of God by the promise of the gospel, by faith in Christ!
