“And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” – (Luke 5:31-31)
This reply of the LORD was directed toward the self-righteous scribes and Pharisees. They were repulsed by publicans and sinners, because they proudly considered themselves to be holier than other men. They could not understand why a man of God would sit and eat with sinners. They were ignorant of the grace of God. Christ came to save sinners! He’s the Physician!
We don’t fully understand all the implications of this title our LORD takes, because we live in a day when doctors work in sanitized buildings with protective gloves and masks. Physicians in ancient days were different. If a terrible disease broke out, the physician was sent to the village to care for the sick. He would travel with all his tools of medicine and set up camp in the village. There he would meet the diseased and afflicted, bringing them into his tents to treat them. The sights and smells of a physician’s tent were not for the weak minded. You cannot imagine the corruption and filth, unless you’ve had hands-on experience as a caregiver. But if you could ask the physician, “Why do you spend all day and night in this tent with diseased people and putrefying smells? Why are you so happy to sit by their beds, touching their sickness and being touched by their sickness?” He would reply, “Because I’m a physician, and this is my occupation, my passion and my calling, to help the sick. They need my knowledge and expertise. I’ve given my life to the cause of healing the sick and helping the needy.”
Why is Christ so willing to touch and be touched with the feelings of the infirmities of the guilty? Why does the holy Son of God rejoice to sit and eat with publicans and sinners? It’s because He came to save sinners, and because sinners need Him. He’s not repulsed for our sinful hands to reach out and touch Him by faith. He’s not disgusted for our polluted breath to breathe His holy Name in prayer. He’s the Great Physician! Are you a sinner? Is your heart plagued with sin, putrefying with guilt, and desperately wicked? Do you need the tender mercy of Christ?
"Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love and power.
Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him."
