The tower of Babel is an emblem of false religion. It represents the erroneous doctrine of all man-centered, free-will, works belief. The Babel builders of Genesis 11 are still endeavoring to erect a tower today in most modern day churches. They fashion the same bricks and use the same slime in an attempt to reach heaven by their own works.
All man-centered religion is rebellion against God. The men of Babel rejected the will of God that was given to Noah. God told Noah and his posterity, “Be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein” (Gen 9:7). But the Babel believers said, “Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth” (v 4). Today, the religion of Babel rejects the truth of God’s sovereign will in the salvation of chosen sinners in Christ. They outright deny or overtly omit the glorious doctrine of God our Savior’s election of grace in divine predestination (Eph 1:3-6). They build a tower with the earthly bricks of man’s “free-will” and the slimy, false teaching of universal atonement.
The Babel builders said, “Let us make a name,” in direct opposition to that Name above all names, the Lord Jesus Christ. False religion holds the Name of God and the purpose of His grace in contempt. Its only purpose is the applause and approval of unregenerate men. That is why false teachers promote the will and works of man, to make a name for themselves, and “lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ” (Gal 6:12).
The Babel builders audaciously presumed to reach Heaven by their own fleshly works. They were not content to wait patiently on God to bring Heaven down to Earth by the woman’s Seed, according to the promise of the Gospel. Even so, today, Babylonian religion is not content to preach the Gospel of Christ and wait on the LORD God to send His Spirit in power to regenerate the spiritually dead. Instead, God-given faith is replaced with fleshy emotion, carnal ceremonies, and outward acts of religious devotion. Sanctification by God’s sovereign grace is rejected for a tangible progression of fleshly deeds.
Babel means ‘confusion’, “because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth” (v 9). Confounded will be the followers and promoters of all free-will, works religion in that day when Christ professes to them, “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” They will say, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” (Matt 7:22-23).
