“And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation” (Genesis 7:1)
God called Noah into the ark, because God saw Noah as righteous before Him in his generation. In this true account we have a picture of the righteousness which is by faith.
THE EFFECTUAL CALL OF GOD
First, the Spirit of God sets before us the effectual call of God’s grace. The LORD said to Noah, “Come thou and all thy house into the ark.” God called him by name. God called him into the ark by an effectual, irresistible call. This was a distinguishing call (1 Cor 1:26-29). God chose Noah. That’s why He called him! (Jude 1:1).
THE EFFECT OF GOD’S CALLING
Second, we see the effect of God’s effectual call. By faith, he went in and abided in the ark. “And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood” (v 7). God never called a sinner by His sovereign grace who didn’t obey (Matt 9:9). Men fall away from the Gospel, and forsake the things of Christ, because God never called them to begin with (1 Jn 2:19).
THE CAUSE OF GOD’S EFFECTUAL CALL
Third, we see the cause of God’s effectual call, the reason why God called Noah. God said to Noah, “Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation” (v 1).
Does that say what I think it says? Did God call Noah into the ark, because Noah was righteous? That’s what the word of God says! Well then, what does it mean? It means that God called Noah into the ark, because God saw Noah as righteous in his generation!
Everything God does in the salvation of our souls is according to perfect righteousness and truth. If God calls you by His grace, He will call you because it’s perfectly righteous and just to do so.
Now then, we know that Noah was not righteous in and of himself. Noah was a sinful man, just like us. In fact, it wasn’t long after God had saved him from the flood, that Noah fell into a sinful act of drunkenness (Gen 9:20-21). So then, if God called Noah into the ark because he was righteous, we know that it was by no righteousness of his own that he was righteous. Noah was righteous in Christ, and that’s why God called him into the ark. God viewed Noah in Christ and saw him as righteous, before the day of his calling.
THREE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED
First, the righteousness of Christ is the cause of our calling! Saving faith in Christ, which is the gift of God’s calling, is the result of Christ’s righteousness. God calls sinners by effectual grace and power, because we’re saved by the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. God “hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (2 Tim 1:9).
Second, righteousness is not accomplished by or contributed to by our faith. We do not become righteous before God when we believe in Christ. Before God, His elect were righteous in Christ from all eternity. We simply receive the righteousness of God by faith. Righteousness is imputed to us when we believe, but our faith does nothing to accomplish righteousness. Christ alone is all our Righteousness (1 Cor 1:30-31).
Third, the righteousness of Christ is the cause of our faith. In fact, it’s by the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel that we obtain precious faith in Christ. The Apostle Peter wrote his second epistle “to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Pt 1:1). Paul said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth… For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith” (Rom 1:16-17). Those, who are justified in Christ, shall most assuredly live by faith. Our Savior said, “Because I live, ye shall live also” (Jn 14:19). And the just shall live by the righteousness of faith as it is revealed from faith to faith. The faith of Christ our Savior is the cause of our faith! By His faithful obedience unto death, by fulfilling all righteousness as our Surety, we obtain the righteousness of faith by Him. He was “foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God” (1 Pt 1:20-21).
WHAT ENCOURAGEMENT TO FAITH IN CHRIST!
God said to Noah, “Come thou into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me.” Who has God seen righteous in Christ? All who come to Christ! Those who come to God by faith in Christ are already righteous by the intercession of Christ our Great High Priest. He ever lives to make intercession for all who come to God by Him (Heb 7:24-25). God does not say, “Come to Christ and I will see you righteous.” God says, “Come to Christ for I have seen you righteous!” By Christ, all that believe, are righteous and have been righteous from everlasting! (Acts 13:39).
