What will it take to bring you to Christ? Some of you are yet lost, without Christ, without faith in Him. What will it take for you to believe Him and come to Him? In John 4, God our Savior demonstrates exactly what it takes to bring a lost sinner to Himself. The Lord met and saved an adulterous woman of Samaria, showing that the conversion of a sinner’s heart is God’s work alone.
GOD CROSSED HER PATH
You will never come to Christ, until He first comes to you. The Lord crossed this sinner’s path. “He must needs go through Samaria” (v 4). The Savior’s sovereign grace constrained Him to go through Samaria, because there were some chosen, redeemed sheep that He must bring into the fold (Jn 10:16). The fact is, sinners will never seek the LORD until He first seeks them. God must intervene and get in your way, or you will choose to perish in unbelief. Your will and your choice have nothing to do with your salvation, but your will and choice have everything to do with your damnation. The will of God must intervene in your life by His sovereign grace, because if He leaves you alone to your obstinate will, you’ll surely perish. The Savior said, “No man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father” (Jn 6:65).
GOD CREATED IN HER AN INTEREST
You will never come to Christ, until He creates in you an interest and a thirst for His grace. The Savior told the Samaritan woman, “Give me to drink,” to initiate a conversation and get her attention. The Lord is always first to make advances of tender mercy towards helpless sinners. He is always the relentless Pursuer of His elect. Christ wooed her, telling her of the water of life, which He alone must give. He said, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water” (v 10). Salvation is the gift of God and free for the asking, but sinners by nature are ignorant of the Giver, the Lord Jesus Christ. If you knew Him, you would ask of Him, and He would have given you living water. Asking the LORD for life springs from knowing Him as the gracious Giver of eternal life. By Christ speaking and reasoning with her by His word, this sinner was finally brought to ask Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw” (v 15). Unless the LORD reasons with you by His almighty grace, sweetly forcing you to ask of Him, you will never be saved. “Ask, and it shall be given you” (Luke 11:9).
GOD EXPOSED HER SIN TO HER
You will never come to Christ, until He exposes to you your sin and guilt. When the woman at the well asked for the living Water, the first thing the Lord did to give her the Water was expose her sin to her. He said to her, “Go, call thy husband, and come hither” (v 16). She answered honestly, “I have no husband,” to which the Lord replied, “Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband” (vv 17-18). The Lord knew all that she had ever done (v 29). All that she had ever done was sin. All that you have ever done is sin. But unless God convinces you of your ruined, sinful condition, you will never come to Christ. Conviction is the work of God alone. He knows all the sin and corruption of your heart, and He knows how to strip and expose you to yourself. God has promised toward His people, “Now will I discover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of mine hand” (Hos 2:10). When the Spirit of Truth comes to a sinner in mercy, He first reproves him of his sin, because he believes not the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn 16:7-11). No man will ever believe Christ until the Holy Spirit convicts him of sin. Unless God the Holy Spirit convinces you of your desperate need for mercy, you will never come to Christ, and you will never be saved.
GOD DESTROYED HER FALSE REFUGE
You will never come to Christ, and you will never be saved, unless God destroys every false refuge and place of hiding you have made for yourself. When the Savior exposed the sin of the woman at the well, she immediately changed the subject and ran for refuge into her father’s religion. She said to the Lord, “Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship” (vv 19-20). Just as Adam hid from God’s presence among the trees of the garden, a lost sinner finds false comfort hiding from God among the fig leaves of self-righteousness in false religion. How did the Lord destroy the Samaritan woman’s false refuge? He simply told her the truth. He said to her, “Woman, believe me” (v 21). Christ is the Truth! Every false refuge is destroyed when Christ the Truth speaks effectually to a sinner’s heart by His word. You will never come to Christ, until He causes you to believe the truth of His word.
GOD REVEALED CHRIST IN HER
Finally, you will never come to Christ, until Christ reveals Himself to you and in you by His grace. What will it take to bring you to Christ? What will it take for you to believe Him, come to Him, and trust Him? It will take the same thing it took for the Samaritan woman. The Lord finally shut her up to faith in the Christ of God. Finally, she said, “I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things” (v 25). Until you are shut you up to Christ, shut up to faith, you will never be saved. But when the Lord finally brings you to the end of yourself, all it takes for Him to irresistibly bring you to Himself is a revelation of His glory. As soon as she expressed her desire for Christ, He said unto her, “I that speak unto thee am he” (v 26). He gave her of the water of life, freely! (Rev 21:6).
O may God be pleased to reveal Christ to you and in you today! Amen.
